Archbishop of Canterbury. He served in this position from April 1783 until his death. The son of a butcher, he received his education at The Crypt School in Gloucester and in 1745 he entered Pembroke College in Oxford, England, from where he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1748 and his Master of Arts Degree in 1751. He then took holy orders, after which he served as a tutor to Lords Charles and Robert Spencer, the younger sons of Charles Spencer, the 3rd Duke of Marlborough. In September 1761 he was preferred to the fifth prebendal stall in the cathedral of Durham, England and in April 1763, he became a canonry at Christ Church, Oxford. He received his Bachelor of Divinity and Doctor of Divinity in July 1764 and in September 1771 he became the Dean of Canterbury, England and in February 1775 he was installed as Bishop at Bangor, Wales. When Archbishop Frederick Cornwallis died in March 1783, he became the Archbishop of Canterbury the following month. Although not noted as an outstanding ecclesiastic, he was an amiable and worthy prelate, a competent administrator, and a promoter of the Sunday-school movement and of missionary enterprise. He died at Lambeth Palace, the residence for the Archbishop of Canterbury, at the age of 74.
