Eliza Comstock.

Eliza Comstock, was born September 17, 1830 to Lyman (William) Comstock and Harriet Ball. In 1830, Lyman Comstock was living in Chautauqua, Chautauqua, New York. Somewhere after 1844, the family moved to Ohio where Eliza married Jacob R. Gwin, son of Thomas Gwin and Laviny (Lavinia) O'Dell. He was born in 1825 in Wayne County, Ohio. This marriage took place on December 31, 1848 in Coshocton County, Ohio..
By 1850 the couple, Eliza and Jacob were living in Killbuck, Holmes. While Eliza's obituary indicates that by 1856, the couple had immigrated to Bear Creek (Brooklyn), Poweshiek County, Iowa. They had three living children by 1856 – Lavinia "Jane" born about 1851 (census records indicate that she was born in Iowa); George H. born in September 1854 in Iowa; and Sarah E. who was born February 9, 1856, also in Iowa. By the summer of 1859, Eliza was expecting her 5th child by Jacob; however tragedy struck the family twice. Jacob died on July 26, 1859 and was buried in Brooklyn, Iowa and then their son, Lyman was born and died on October 15, 1859. He was buried near his father in Brooklyn, Iowa.
The 1860 Census indicates that Eliza was maintaining the farm near Malcom, Iowa. The value of the property was $1,080 and her personal property was valued at $440.
Eliza married Martin Koester on August 26, 1861 in Poweshiek County, Iowa. He was born August 6, 1824 in Holstein, Denmark. No other background information has been found on Martin Koester. They had 3 living children: John A. who was born November 29, 1861; and Mary Maria who was born October 27, 1866 after Martin returned from the Civil War. Records indicate that they had one additional child, but gender and date of birth is unknown. By December 1869, Eliza and Martin were divorced.
Eliza then met and married John Crist. He was the son of Isaiah Crist and Eliza Ann Fisher and was born about 1843 in Herkimer, New York. The couple remained in Poweshiek County for several years and by 1880 the couple had moved to Richland Township, Jasper County, Iowa. They had two children, but only one survived – Laura C, who was born April 12, 1876. The couple remained in Iowa until at least 1885 (living once again in Poweshiek County at the time of this census) and it is believed sometime after 1890, they moved to Reeds Springs, Taney County, Missouri, where John passed on January 19, 1900.
By the time the census was completed in 1900, Eliza's records indicated that she had had eleven children, and five were living – George, Sarah, John, Alice, and Mary Maria. She was continuing to farm and owned her land..
Civil War Pension records indicate that she remarried on December 1909 to Samuel M. Humphrey in Forsyth, Taney County, Missouri. National Archives Civil War Pension records document that Eliza did marry Samuel Humphrey in December 1909; however, within a few months, Eliza found that he had lied to her about his previous residence history and in fact he had been in an "insane hospital". when she wrote to the bank in St.Joseph where he had indicated he had money, she found that he had also not been truthful about his bank account either. Census records do not indicate she took his name or lived with him according to the 1910 census. By the end of 1910 they were divorced in Jasper County, Missouri.
It is believed about this time, it is believed that she lived with her son John in Carthage, Jasper County, Missouri where she passed in February 15, 1922. She was buried in an unmarked grave in Oak Hill Cemetery in Carthage, Missouri.
