"SAVANNAH, Mo. - J. R. Bowman, 84, Savannah, passed away Sunday, May 11, 2008, at a Savannah health-care center.

J. R. was born Sept. 14, 1923, in Nodaway, Mo., the son of Ira and Effie (Warner) Bowman. He attended White Oak School and Amazonia (Mo.) High School. Mr. Bowman was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in WWII. J. R. enjoyed farming all of his life. He was a member of Wyatt Park Baptist Church and Dick Munkres American Legion Post No. 287. On June 13, 1951, he married Sylvia (Yunker) Bowman at St. John's Church in Amazonia.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Carol Diane Bowman; son, Dennis J. Bowman; and two brothers, William and Warner Bowman.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia of the home; son, Ron Bowman, and wife, Leslie, of Columbia, Mo.; daughter, Sylvia Eileen Stark and husband, Gary, of Columbia, Pa.; two grandchildren and a great-grandson, Jordan Stark; a sister, Illa Strasser of St. Joseph; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Service 1 p.m. Wednesday at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel, St. Joseph. Interment: St. John's Cemetery, Amazonia. The family suggests memorial contributions to Shady Lawn Nursing Home or Kendallwood Hospice." St Joseph News-Press, May 13, 2008
