On October 12, 1855, he was married to Mary A. EMERY. To this union eight children were born—four of whom, with the mother, have preceded him, leaving to mourn their loss, Mrs. Rebecca EDINGTON, of Bloomfield; John HAYES, of Bedford; Jonas HAYES and Mrs. Ella ASHCRAFT, Koleen.
He united with the Christian church more than sixty years ago, and has consistently adhered to that faith through all the years. Owing to old age he has not been so active recently in church work as in former years, but he never faltered in his faith in the saving power of Christ.
He was a man of strong and pronounced convictions on all questions. In politics he was an ardent Republican, and took great interest in all matters pertaining to his country's welfare. He loved his country's flag, and was a genuine patriot of the pure American type. He was clean and pure in thought, word and deed, and his example is one that the coming generation can well afford to emulate.
For the past few years he has made his home with his son, Jonas, where he has endeared himself to the entire family, and especially the children, by his kind and sympathetic indulgence.
He died May 21, 1920, at the ripe old age of eighty-five years, six months and eighteen days.
He will be missed by a host of old neighbors and friends.
The funeral services were held on May 23, conducted by Rev. Joseph FLOYD, of Switz City, and interment in the Taylor Ridge cemetery.
