Ira Dorton married Zoroda Stroer on November 26, 1898 in Pine Bluff, Jefferson, Arkansas.

"Ira Dorton, 66, Abilene railroad man since 1907, succumbed to an heart attack Saturday in his home at 517 Jeanette Street.

Funeral services will be held from the First Methodist Church, of which Mr. Dorton was a member, this afternoon at 4 o'clock. The Rev. J.H. Hambler, pastor, will officiate and burial will follow in the City cemetery.

Mr. Dorton was born in Illinois on October 21, 1871. He worked in Jonesboro, Arkansas with the Cotton Belt Railroad for several years and then came to Abilene in 1907 as a switchman for the Texas and Pacific Railroad. When the Abilene and Southern was built, he became a conductor on that railroad and served as such until the time of his death. Mr. Dorton was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Conductors and Trainmen. He was married to Mrs. Mabel McFarland on August 12, 1914.

Survivors include the wife; two sons, Bill and Lester of Abilene; a daughter, Mrs. Harry Davis of Wichita Falls; a stepson, Horace McFarland; two brothers, John Dorton of Fort Smith, Arkansas and M.M. Dorton of San Bernardino, California; and two sisters living in Memphis, Tennessee." Abilene Reporter News, October 24, 1937
