In 1862 during the Civil War, Reuben at age 53, who had 3 sons serving in the war, went with his squirrel rifle on his shoulder to help repel Confederate General Kirby Smith, who was then moving in on Cincinnati. Reuben was very active in community affairs and has filled every position in the county.
