Reuben was son of Timothy Everts and Hannah Bigelow. Some Everts also spelled surname as Evarts. He was husband of Rebecca Howard. Reuben led an interesting life. He was born in Canada where his father was in the transportation business on Lakes Champlain and Ontario. When the War of 1812
broke out, his father refused to take an oath to the King and was imprisoned and all property, both real and personal, was confiscated. He was left left penniless with a wife and 9 children. After his father's release from prison, the family went to New York and through the help of friends and relatives, made his way to Ohio. Reuben was a farmer, school teacher (as were his parents), Free Mason and Justice of the Peace for 36 years. He took an interest in preserving the history of Richland Co., Ohio, which has been recorded in the history books of the county. In 1862 during the Civil War, Reuben at age 53, who had 3 sons serving in the war, went with his squirrel rifle on his shoulder to help repel Confederate General Kirby Smith, who was then moving in on Cincinnati. Reuben was very active in community affairs and has filled every position in the county.
