16th & 4th OH Inf Co I & G, Corp
On April 22, 1861, Andrew Evarts enlisted in Co. I 16th OH Infantry and served for four months. He reenlisted in Co. B 4th OH and served for two years. During that time, Andrew was promoted to Corporal. Cpl. Evarts was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness and was permanently disable. He received a monthly pension of $8.00.
Returning to Ohio, Andrew married Maria Stanton (b. 1845) on February 22, 1871. They had no children. Andrew and Maria came to Ford County, Kansas in 1878 and settled on a homestead 11 miles northwest of Dodge City.
They entered the Soldiers Home at Ft. Dodge in 1900. Andrew the police officer at the Home. Maria had suffered from rheumatism for several years and passed away in 1913 and is buried at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Fort Dodge. In 1917, Andrew married Laura Somers Hoss. She was a Civil War widow whose husband; Sgt. Thomas O. Hoss had passed away in 1914. At the time of her marriage to Andrew, Laura had two adult boys.
Andrew passed away in 1927. He shares the same stone as his first wife. Laura died in 1933 and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery in Dodge City, Ford County, Kansas.
