Gloucester was founded in 1623 as a Massachusetts Bay Colony by the Dorchester Company from Dorchester England. The following list of ships plus crew and passenger names is taken from shipwrecks from Gloucester Massachusetts 1830 to 1873.

Two vessels and six lives were lost this year, as follows:

Schooner IDA was lost on Georges in the month of March. Had six men, viz; Job Rowe, Master; Albert Oakes, Francis Colbach, Samuel Lloyd, Joshua Clark, Andrew Johnson. Valued at $1,800; uninsured.

Schooner MARY & ELIZABETH, Capt. Friend; lost at St.. Peters Bay of St. Lawrence in October. Crew saved. Valued at $2,000: insured for $1,400.
