Mr. Deurweent G. Simmons (George), born Sept. 19, 1924, in Clyde, Kansas, to Lawrence Ray and Vera Montgomery Simmons entered peacefully into eternal rest on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, in Lawton, Oklahoma.
Survived by wife, Reva Ballard Simmons, of the home, George was predeceased by wife, Margy Ball Simmons, after 55 years of marriage, by wife, Clariece Lingle Simmons, after 2 years of marriage, by his parents, brother Bobby and wife, Joanna, sister Dewey Crist Matherly and husbands Johnny Crist and Edwin Matherly, sister Maureen Gunn and granddaughter, Angela Biddy.
Mr. Simmons is also survived by daughter, Leanna K. Bridgett and husband Jim (Friendswood, TX), son, Kenneth G. Simmons and wife Tonya (Altus), grandchildren David Bridgett and wife Andria (Sycamore, IL), Eric Bridgett and wife Rachel (Houston, TX), Jennifer Ledesma and husband Raul (Altus), Kenneth Simmons, II ( Norman), Kevin Simmons and wife Jessica (Altus); brothers Norman, Lawrence and Daniel, sisters Harriett Huber and Diana Roberts (Clifford), brother-in-law Thomas Gunn, 11 greatgrandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, members of the Lingle and Ballard families.
Mr. Simmons served honorably in combat during World War II as a member of the 242nd Infantry Regiment, 42nd Infantry Division, the Rainbow Division, during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star for his service in the US Army. Following his discharge in 1946, George began a 43 year Civil Service career with the US Bureau of Reclamation during which time he worked on projects in Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas.
Originally a fan of Nebraska football, Mr. Simmons became an ardent OU supporter after attending a game in Norman where he sat in the student section of the stadium. He later explained his conversion by saying, "All those people couldn't be wrong."
Mr. Simmons worked hard throughout his life starting with working his way through high school. He was humble, principled and courageous. He loved and enjoyed his family and step-families especially the grandchildren and "greatgrands," his friends, in particular Rick and Jill Bottom and their daughter, Brooke, Phil and Mary Lankford, and his Bureau (of Reclamation) "family." He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and keeping track of the stock market.
The family wishes to thank the many home caregivers, the staffs at English Village and the Lawton Veteran's Center who helped ease the last months of George's life.
Funeral services for Mr. Simmons will be 10 a.m. Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Kincannon Funeral Home with John Lingle officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Altus City Cemetery under the direction of Kincannon Funeral Home.
The Simmons family will greet friends Friday evening from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Kincannon Funeral Home.
