Veteran Policeman at Monongahela Dies

Charles Byers, 67, of 509 Oark avenue, Monongahela, a well known veteran patrolman, died at 12:30 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 1948, in Monongahela Memorial Hospital.
Byers, a lifelong resident of the community, entered the hospital two weeks ago for an appenectomy. His conditions became critical when complications set in but his death came as a distinct shock to Monongahelans.
Byers was born in New Eagle December 22, 1880. He had been a member of the city police force for 24 years. Fraternally, he belonged to the Monongahela Valley Fraternal Order of Police.
Surviving with his wife, Elizabeth Mathews Byers, are one daughter, Mrs. R. M. Pearson, of Greensboro, Pa.; two sons, Charles Jr., of Monongahela, and William J., of El Paso, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. William Kiddy of Elrama, Mrs. Albert Barton of Monongahela, and Miss Bertha Byers, of Monongahela, and two brothers, John a member of Donora Police Department; and George of Courtney. Six grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive.
