George Derr was born in Maryland, a son of Noah Edward Derr and Henrietta S. Gorsuch. He had siblings James Andrew, Henry Clay, Clara Virginia, Arthur Hammock, Dollie May, Noah Edwin and Edward M.

He married Frances Leah Primmer in Piatt County, Illinois on January 6, 1898. They had a daughter Mabel Frances. (Frances had an earlier marriage to Clarence Gustus Lust in 1894.)

In 1900 George and Frances were living in Blue Ridge, Piatt, Illinois where they were farmers. When the 1910 census was taken they were living in a hotel in Waukesha, Wisconsin. They were back in Blue Ridge by 1920 and he was a farm hand but they moved in 1920 to Urbana, Illinois where George started a landscape gardening business.

George died after a three week illness. He was survived by his wife Frances; daughter Mrs. Mabel Reinhold, Urbana; brother Arthur Derr and sister Mrs. Clara Shuirr, both of Springfield, Ohio.
