Alvin Flury, 93, passed away on January 1, 2014 in a local care center.

He was born in Austin, TX. in 1920 and attended school there until joining the Navy just after Pearl Harbor. He served in the South Pacific until 1945.

He received a BA degree in biology from UT Austin in 1948 and a Masters in zoology in 1951. He was employed by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department as an aquatic biologist in South Texas from 1951 to 1965. He taught at ASU in San Angelo from 1965-1979 and received his doctorate from Texas Tech in 1972. He retired in 1979 to enjoy gardening and fishing. He was active in both San Angelo bass clubs and, at age 80, caught a 45 lb catfish on a trotline and brought it to shore with his kayak.

Alvin was preceded in death by Florence Mae, his wife of sixty years. He is survived by daughters Barbara and husband Bill; Carol; son John and wife Terri; daughter Connie and husband Kenny; 13 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 1-2 PM on Friday, January 3, 2014 at Johnson's Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2:30 PM, January 3rd in Johnson's Funeral Home chapel. Graveside service will follow in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

The family wishes to thank the staff of Meadow Creek Nursing Center for their father's care the last 5 years and to Odyssey Hospice. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Meals for the Elderly or a charity of your choice.
