Son of Abner and Olive Crowell,married Phebe C. Miner, a Hartford school teacher. Capt. Crowell was one of eleven children. He went to sea at age 10 and sailed on every sea. In the 1860's he gave up foreign voyages and had the schooner Hattie Baker built which he commanded for several years in the coasting business and later he commanded the three-master, Maggie G. Hart.
