Bertha Spiehs, the daughter of Wiley and Bertha (Kincaid) Wadkins, was born in McCool Junction, Nebraska on September 20, 1912 and died in Aurora, Nebraska on May 31, 1999, at the age of 86 years, 8 months and 11 days.

The family moved to Phillips in May 1916, where her father owned and operated a general merchandise store for 27 years. Bertha graduated from Phillips High School, working as a relief operator at the local telephone office, all during her high school years. After graduation she taught school in a rural district near Phillips.

On February 12, 1931, she was united in marriage to Glen Billings. They owned a garage and filling station in Phillips. Bertha graduated from Grand Island Beauty School and owned and operated a beauty shop in Phillips for 10 years before they moved to the Sims farm near Phillips in 1953. Mr. Billings died at the Mayo Clinic in April 1969. Bertha moved to Phillips following his death and she worked as hostess in a Grand Island restaurant for 5 years.

On November 7, 1975, she was united in marriage to Alfred Spiehs. They moved to Grand Island in 1982. Mr. Spiehs died in 1988 and Bertha moved back to Phillips in 1994.

She loved the vegetables and flowers in her garden. A hobby of hers was crocheting and she made afghans for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Her parents, two husbands,three sisters and two sisters preceded her in death.

She is survived by her daughter; Glova (Mrs. Daryle) Osborne of Phillips; a grandson, Brad ( Mary) Osborne, Lincoln; three granddaughters, Keri (Mrs. Tony) Anderson, Alma; Glenna (Mrs. Bruce) Dorn, Beatrice; and Tammy (Mrs. Lance) Zach, of Olathe, Kansas; and ten great-grandchildren, Daryle and Charles Osborne; Anthony, Aaron, KeriLeigh, Austin and Katrina Anderson; Brennan, Garren and Braxton Dorn; one stepson, Glen ( Marcia) Spiehs of Phillips; three step-grandchildren, Jeff (Mindy) Spiehs of Hastings, Minnesota; Toby Spiehs of Lincoln; Shari Spiehs of Hastings; one sister, Laura Gowlovech of Grand Island; one brother, Fahy (Velma) Wadkins of Lexington; two sisters-in-law, May Billings of Auburn, Indiana and Mareta Billings of Ventura, California.
