James was the son of Wiley Holland and Edith Ligon Thornton Gandy.
He married Emma Sandidge on Oct. 28, 1880. James and Emma were the parents of Edith E. Gandy Goodwill, Sterling W. Gandy, Infant Gandy, and Claiborne H. Gandy.
Following Emma's death in 1886, James married Leona Catherine Robinson. James and Leona were the parents of Elizabeth Catherine Gandy Gibson Hicks, Shellie Ewing Gandy, Ione Gandy, Mozelle Gandy White, Guy Ira Gandy, Annie Mae Gandy Baker and Hoke Gandy.
