Robert served in Company H, 18th Alabama Infantry, for three years during the Civil War. In July 1899 at the age of 59, Robert filed for a Confederate Pension stating he had lived in Leon County for the past 25 years. He indicated he made his living farming and his health was bad. His health problems were due to physical wounds and disease contracted while serving in the Army. He said his only personal property were two horses and a wagon with a value of $45. He had sold his land claim for $200 within the past two years, and his total income was about $50 a year. He further stated he was destitute and unable to labor to earn support and had never deserted the Confederacy.

Laura was Robert J's second wife. He was first married to Martha J Floyd. Robert's third wife was Dora Yancy. Robert had children by all three wives. (Hoping someone can help with linking them)

Dr. E.O. Boggs swore that both of Robert's legs were injured by explosion of shells. He continued to suffer considerable necrosis of both bones of the right leg as well as chronic bronchitis and illness resulting from measles, all contracted while in the service of the Confederate States of America. Robert's application was approved, and he drew a Confederate pension until his death.
