He was born near Winslow, Indiana. He was a member of the Church of God, Anderson, IN. He worked as a repairman at the International Harvester Company (Navistar) for 30 years, retiring in 1972.
He is survived by his wife Helen Utterback Nelson; three daughters Karen Tomlin (Don), Brenda Ranger and Becky McCoy (Jim), all of Indianapolis, IN; son Rev. Stephen A. Nelson (Glenda) of Jonesboro, IA; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sister Hazel Stogsdill of Indianapolis; several nieces and nephews. August was a preceded in death by a young son Larry Wayne Nelson.
