Verlie was married three times. She first married Walter H Young (surname believed to actually be Youngblood) on 1 Mar 1916 in Montgomery, Alabama. It was determined that he was a German spy. Verlie's brothers broke up the marriage. Verlie received a letter a number of years later from an attorney in Germany saying that Walter had died and had named her as heir to some land that he owned. She dismissed the letter as she thought it couldn't be true and was afraid it would take money to pursue it.
She married Roy Wayne Athey on 24 Sep 1921 in San Antonio, Texas. They had a daughter who died at birth circa 1925. They had a son who grew to adulthood, married, and had four children. She lived for a number of years in Dallas, Texas, later moving to Roswell, New Mexico to help care for her brother's ailing wife. She then lived for a brief time with her son's family in Colorado, ultimately moving to the Los Angeles area and living with her sister Hilda, where she spent the remainder of her years.
She later married Walter Barnard, a distant cousin. Her granddaughter has not been able to determine how they were related nor locate a record of their marriage or divorce.
She was a bright, independent woman who loved to travel and was very interested in genealogy. She would travel the country visiting relatives and kept written records with vital statistics on family members. Her granddaughter Darlene 'caught' the genealogy bug from her.
