John Ramsay started life in Scotland as a book-seller, jeweller, die-sinker and engraver. He married Margaret Thompson and had four children in Glasgow. In 1878 they headed for Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, eventually settling in the suburb of Prahran. In Australia, he became a successful businessman on the back of a real-estate boom and they had a further five children, acquiring a mansion "Clydebank" in the suburb of Essendon in 1888.

Three of his children went on to greater fame; William as a manufacturer and creator of Kiwi-brand shoe polish (now owned by S.C. Johnson), Hugh as an acclaimed portrait painter, and John as a surgeon who was knighted for his services to surgery in 1939.

John was a very religious man, wrote a book of essays on religious subjects, acted as lay preacher in the Congregational church, and taught a Bible class at the YMCA before dying at Clydebank, aged 83 years.
