Hugh Ramsay was one of nine children of John and Margaret Ramsay who had migrated to Melbourne from Scotland in 1878. The Ramsays moved into a large property known as ‘Clydebank' at Essendon in 1888. Hugh Ramsay attended the Australian National Gallery School between 1894 and 1899, studying under the drawing masters Frederick McCubbin and Bernard Hall. Ramsay won many art prizes in Australia before travelling to Europe in 1900 where he studied and exhibited in respected galleries. As his style developed, his preference for portraiture emerged. Ramsay contracted tuberculosis and returned to Australia in 1902. Despite the warmer climate back at Clydebank he gradually became weaker and died on 5 March 1906 aged 28.
