He was born in January 1911 as Kornelis David de Jong in the village of Wierum on the North Sea coast in former municipality Westdongeradeel in the utter northeastern part of the Dutch northern province of Friesland, son of 34 yeas aged carpenter Remmeren de Jong (1876 Wierum - 1967 Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan) and Jantje de Jong (1876 Wierum - 1953 Grand Rapids). Cornelis had three brothers: David [Cornel] (1901 Blija, Ferwerderadeel, Friesland, Netherlands - 1967 Providence, Rhode Island), Remmeren "Raymond" (1902 Blija - 1982 Grandville, Kent, MI) and Meindert (1906 Wierum - 1991 Allegan, Michigan).

The Christian Reformed family De Jong emigrated on 16 May 1914 from Wierum, Friesland, Netherlands to Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan, United States. They arrived on 2 June 1914 on the SS Nieuw Amsterdam at the port of New York, Ellis Island. In Grand Rapids they lived successively in four houses in the vicinity of Wealthy Street and Diamond Avenue. The De Jongs joined the nearby Dennis Avenue Christian Reformed Church. The four boys Americanized quickly, but initially endured hazing as newly-arrived immigrants.

In 1930 Corniel De Jong (19), his father Raymond De Jong (53), his mother Jennie (54) and his brother Meinard (24) lived in Walker, a northwestern suburb of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan.

In May 1940 Cornell Dejong (29, bricklayer), his wife Martha (29, Michigan) and their daughter Mary (2, Michigan) lived at an own home, worth $1800, in Paris Township, since 1967 called Kenwood, a city just north of Grand Rapids, Kent County, Michigan. They lived in 1935 at the same place.

His wife Martha died in 1995. Widower Corneil De Jong died in March 2008 in Grand Rapids at the age of 97 years, but lived more than 40 years in Ada, about six miles east of Grand Rapids.
