Serop Sookiasian was born to Bedros Sookiasian and his wife Elizabeth Kaloustian in Malatya, Turkey. He had a brother Kerope, and two relatives Mary and Theresa Paragian who could have been his sisters. He and Kerope came to America along with their cousin Sarkis Sookiasian through Ellis Island in 1909. His birth year is uncertain and is listed as different dates in different records. On his death certificate it is March 15, 1893, and on his registry for the World War I draft it is April 22, 1891, but he is listed as age 20 when he immigrated in 1909. These dates were often changed while immigrating and also they often did not know their exact birthday. In 1917 he was a cabinet maker at Lincoln Furniture Company at 19th and Lehigh Avenues, and at his death he was a laborer in a dye house. He had brown eyes and black hair. He became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1926. Serope married Rebecca around 1928 in Philadelphia and they lived at 2139 N. 9th Street in Philadelphia. Serope died of influenza contributed to by pneumonia. The informant on his death certificate was John Nazarethian, presumably his cousin as both their mothers' maiden names were Kaloustian. Serope was originally buried at Philadelphia's Monument Cemetery in Section D, Lot 719, Grave 4 North. He was exhumed on May 16, 1956 and moved to Lawnview Cemetery because Monument had been condemned by court order and was later built over by Temple University. Confusingly, Serope is listed in the cemetery records as "Kerope Sookiasian", which was actually his brother's name. The records spell Sookiasian without the first i as many in the family did. His grave is unmarked but is located to the right of a plaque which says Carrington.
