Bernice Love Redmond, 80, died Aug. 10, 2012 at Rush Memorial Hospital in Meridian, Miss.
She was born Dec. 13, 1932 in Grove Hill to the late Sidney and Mattie Morrissette Love. After graduating from Wilson Hall High School in 1950, she soon relocated to Detroit, Michigan at the age of 19 and began working as a housekeeper. In the not so distant future, she began a career as a supervisor in maintenance engineering with BlueCross BlueShield and ART-VAN for their entire corporate building where she remained until retirement.
Bernice joined the Christian Band at an early age and was religiously educated at Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Grove Hill under the pastorate care of Rev. James Cleveland and continued her tutelage under Rev. J.J. Evans. Her labor of love was cooking down home Southern cuisine for family and friends who sometimes took all day because she insisted on doing all the prep work including setting the table and cooking herself. She would let those who delighted in consuming her meals the luxury of the cleanup. She always kept her home so immaculately clean that some family and friends would jest, "Bernice keeps her house so clean that you can eat your food right off the floor."
Survivors include a daughter, Brenda Love, Grove Hill; one brother, Sidney Love Jr., Thomasville; two sisters, Bessie Martin Washington, Orange, N.J., Gladys Love McBride, Grove Hill; one granddaughter, LaToya "Neice" Love, Jackson; two great-grandchildren, JaLeigha and Jayden Mackenzie, Jackson; sister-in-law, Sue Love, Detroit, Mich., nephews, nieces, other relatives and friends, a dear friend, Verda Mae Frazier and a life long friend, Katherine "Jean" (Ron) Durant; a faithful and devoted niece, Gwendolyn "Gwen" McBride, Grove Hill; a treasured nephew whom she adored and called her son, Roger (Felicia) McBride, Madison.
After building a life for herself in Michigan, "The Great Lake State," she met and married the love of her life, John Redmond on May 25, 1963. The jubilant couple was the essence of wedded bliss for 33 ½ years until John's departure to be with our Lord. Bernice was also met at the pearly gates by her parents, Sidney and Mattie, brothers, Fred, RT, WC, Collis and Johnny, "Lil Brother."
The service was Aug. 13 at 12 noon at Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Grove Hill with Rev. James Barren, senior pastor, officiating and apostle Bruce Frazier, eulogist. Burial was in the Orange Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers and flower ladies were family and friends.
