Ephraim King "Coach" Berrong, Jr, of Sweetwater, passed away on Tuesday, December 17,2013 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville. A native of Maryville, King resided in Sweetwater for the last sixty-three years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Pacific during World War II. King retired from the Monroe County School System after 38 years of teaching at Vonore High School (one year) and Sweetwater High School (thirty-seven years). King was head football coach at Vonroe HS (one year) and Sweetwater HS (twenty-five years). While at Sweetwater HS, King led the Wildcats to the 1971 and 1972 TSSAA football state championship. He was an inductee into the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame, the Blount County Sports Hall of Fame, the Maryville College Wall of Fame, and the TSSAA Sports Hall of Fame.
He was 88.
Preceded in death by: wife, Margaret Jean Frank Berrong, Father and mother Ephraim King Berrong ,Sr. and Susie Elizabeth Hitson Berrong; brothers George Robert "Bobby" Berrong and James Leon Berrong; great grandson William David Sweitzer.
Survived by his sons and daughters-in-law: David and Nina Tennyson Berrong of Lenoir City, Steve and Liz Atkins Berrong, of Madisonville, Rick and Peggy Trombley Berrong of Sweetwater, Mickey Berrong of Sweetwater, daughter and son-in-law: Kim and Kris Powers, of Athens, grandchildren: Dana Berrong Swetizer, Nikki Berrong Swisher, Chris Berrong, Charlie Berrong, Heather Berrong, Chase Berrong, Josh Berrong, Adam Powers, Blake Powers, Corbin Powers, Dannah Powers, great-grandchildren: Claudia Sweitzer, McKinna Westfield, Brayden Westfield, Millie Anne Swisher, Hunter Daffron, Landon Berrong, Kate Swisher, Kinlee Swisher, sisters: Geveva Webb, and Betty Everett, of Maryville, bother: Bunny Berrong, of Knoxville. Several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Friday, December 20, 2013, at First Baptist Church of Sweetwater, from 5:00P.M. until 7:30P.M. with the funeral service to follow at 7:30P.M. with Dr. Frank Crawford and Rev. Tony Rutherford officiating. Graveside service and interment 11:00A.M. Saturday in the Sweetwater Memorial Park with Pastor: Doug Alexander officiating. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to the St. Jude Children's Hospital or the Gideon's International. Kyker Funeral Homes, Sweetwater, in charge of arrangements.
