Son of Frank Gude & Iola (Cook) Gude. 1 brother, Orval Gude, 2 sisters, Julia (Gude) Bacon & Rose (Gude) Stiles. Graduated from Derby High School in Tobinsport, IN, in 1936. Married Emma Etienne, moved to Blytheville in 1938, 1 son with Emma, James Franklin Gude. Later married to Velma Phillips, 1 son, Joe Russell "Jodie" Gude. Married to Rose Widner Gude at the time of his death.
Joe & his brother Orval owned & operated Gude Brothers' Slaughterhouse in Blytheville from 1940-1984. He was a member of the Blytheville Kiwanis Club & received several distinguished service awards for outstanding service to Blytheville. He served as an alderman from 1968-1984. After 16 years on the city council, rebuilding the grandstand at Walker Park & retiring as a businessman, Joe decided to run for mayor. He was elected in 1984 & was re-elected for 2 more terms. He received numerous awards for his leadership capabilities & community service during his 12 years as mayor. He was a member of the First Baptist Church for 52 years.
Survived by his wife, Rose Widner Gude, son Jodie Gude, 4 step-daughters, Pat Medling, Juanita Davis [Fay], Betty Sue Nall [Jack], Mary Byrd, & 1 step-son, David Michael Widner [Cynthia]; 2 sisters, Julia (Gude) Bacon & Rose (Gude) Stiles. Also survived by 14 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, & several nieces & nephews. Preceded in death by his parents, brother Orval & son Jimmy.
