Born in Pleasant Hills, Belmont County, Ohio, the son of John Brice and Nancy Byers Brice. Husband of Eleanor Taney, daughter of Hugh Taney and Latitia Ballantyne. Educated in country schools until sixteen years old; he attended West Alexander, PA, Academy 1855 and 1856; High School, Powhattan, OH; Classical Academy, Washington, and Lebanon College, OH. Served in the Civil War with Co F 52nd OVI; serving under Generals Buell, Rosencrans, Sheridan, Thomas McCook, and Sherman; in twenty two battles; Chattanooga to Atlanta, GA. May 5, to Sep. 3 1864; with Sherman from "Atlanta to the Sea" and through with Sherman from Savannah GA, South Carolina, North Carolina, Goldsburg, NC, and the final surrender of Lee and the Grand Review at Washington D.C. May 24, 1865. Worked in Wheeling, WV as a druggist 1867 to 1894. Twice a member of the First Branch of the Wheeling City Council, elected City Collector 1887, and served two years; from 1894 has been Literary Editor and Proof Reader on the Wheeling Daily and Sunday Register. Member of Holliday Post No. 12 G.A.R. and of Ohio Lodge No. 1, A.F. & A.M.
