John Cooke was the first settler of Wyoming County. He was born in London in 1752 and kidnapped and sold to a Virginia planter as an indentured servant. He was a Revolutionary soldier and fought in the battles of Point Pleasant, Monmouth, and Stony Point. In lieu of army pay, he was given a grant of land in Montgomery County, Virginia, located on "Little Laurel", on which he and two sons settled in 1799. He is buried here in the Delilah Chapel Graveyard.

Son of John Cooke (1730-1756) of England and Elizabeth Gurney-Cooke (1728-Deceased) of England. He was christened on June 28,1752 at Saint John Smith Square in Westminster,London, England.

Married to Nellie Goodall Pemberton-Cooke (1750-1812) around 1776.

Father of Thomas Cooke Sr. (1776-1854), John "Old Jack" Cooke Esq. (1778-1858), William Doby Cooke Sr. (1784-1853) and James Cooke Sr. (1786-1864).

Also married to Ann Keatley-Cooke (1775-1860) around 1813.
