Letter to the Editor
On Aug 11 a truly exceptional man succumbed to cancer in Palm Sprgs. Stephen "Max" Corey was a world-renowned and widely published educator who had served with distinction on the faculty of the Univ of Chicago and later as a dean of Columbia Univ. His professional achievements resulted in many Friends accolades including those from the government of India and the Friends of the U.S.
Max devoted more than a decade of his retirement supporting the Palm Friend Public Library and the Desert Mental Health Assoc through gifts and many thousands of volunteer hours. Yet it was Max's personal characteristics that made him so remarkable. He could accurately be described as a deeply sage man brimming with compassion, generosity, wit, warmth and dedication.
It must certainly be considered an extraordinary tribute to this community that a man of such consummate, diginity and humanity chose to live among us. My sympathies are with Max's wife, El, who endured his illness with such courage.
It was my, great fortune to be Max's friend. I am one of many who will miss him always.
