Born Michael Gedaliah Kammen, he was raised in Washington, DC, where he attained his bachelor's degree in History from the George Washington University. He went on to earn his doctorate from Harvard University. In 1965, he began a more than forty-year tenure as a member of the faculty staff at Cornell University. Among his other books include "A Rope of Sand: The Colonial Agents, British Politics, and the American Revolution" (1968), "Colonial New York" (1975) and "Robert Gwathmey" (1999).
