Son of Hiram Schoonover and Mary "Polly" Kilpatrick. James was a veteran of the Civil War serving in the Ohio Infantry. He married Laura Wells, 18 February 1844 in Scioto County, Ohio. He was married three times, other two wives were Elizabeth H. Cutlip and Martha Rockwell. James was very close to his brother John Schoonover. They both served in the Civil War for the Union, but in different units. When John was dying of blood poisoning, the only person he wanted to see was his brother James. He sent for James, but James didn't get there in time and John had already died. James served in Co. G, 173rd Regiment, Ohio Volunteers, which was commanded by John Hurt. The regiment went to Nashville, Tennessee, to defend the city and fought the battle of Nashville, December 15th and 16th. They then stayed in Nashville and guarded prisoners until February 1865. They left and were mustered out in Kentucky, then went on to Camp Dennison, Ohio, where they were disbanded July 5, 1865.

Because of the number of wives he had it is difficult to determine all of the childen. One of the wives was Libby R. Rockwell. In the probate papers after he died the following was listed as the children of James:

Almenda Brigner - daughter - living in Oxford, Nebraska

Isaac Schoonover, - son - living in Hastings, Nebraska
