Arden "Skid" Skidmore. 91, died at home in Lima, Pa., on Friday. Sept. 23,2005.
He was born in Holly, W.Va,, and was raised in Morgantown, W.Va. He was a resident of Middletown Township. Delaware Comity for the last 57 years.
He wrote his first news story as a cub sports reporter for the Dominion-News in 1929 at the age of 15. His career as a newsman spanned more than 60 years.
He attended West Virginia University and served as its sports publicity director in 1939,1940 and 1941, He was the sports editor of two West Virginia newspapers and a reporter for the Associated Press in its Pittsburgh, Harrisburg and Philadelphia bureaus.
From 1948 to 1979, he was the wire editor and a staff writer for The Chester Times, Chester, Pa. His interest in local history led to his writing a column called "Other Times." He planned the Sept. 7, 1976. 100th anniversary edition of The Daily Times and wrote most of the stories. He also wrote a series of 60 historical articles for the Saturday magazine section of the newspaper called "Out of Delco's Past." The series won him a citation from Historic Delaware County, which said in part, "his careful research had won the respect of and appreciation of librarians and curators alike." The Chester Times later became The Delaware County Daily Times.
He worked part time as public relations officer at Pennsylvania Military College in Chester for three years. That college is now Widener University.
During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy.
He was an avid photographer interested in history and sports. His photographs included historical sites, famous sports figures and landmark events that would become part of American history. He contributed to local history by writing an account of Samuel Riddle's life. This account was included in the cornerstone of Riddle Memorial Hospital.
He enjoyed traveling and nature. A self-taught horticulturist, he propagated and shared a collection of more than 300 azaleas.
Survivors include a son, Kent E. Skidmore of Richmond. Va.; daughters, Sally S. Kutyla of Lima, Pa. and Kathleen A. Carpenter of West Grove, Pa.: a brother, K.A. Skidmore of Kingwood. W.Va.; four grandchildren: one great-grandchild.
His wife, Joan, a former news writer with the Associated Press and the Chester Times, died in 1990, a few months shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. Services and burial will be private.
