He was the son of Edward and Hannah Townsend Darlington and married Hannah Webb on February 19, 1829. Hannah died in 1843 and in 1850 Ziba married his first cousin Ruth Caldwell Gilpin (8 Aug 1797 - 20 May 1891), the daughter of Isaac Glover Gilpin and Hannah (Darlington) Gilpin. No burial/grave info for her yet found. Ziba was the brother of botanist Dr. William Darlington. Ziba served as a sergeant with Capt. Titus Taylor's company, "American Greys", at Marcus Hook during the War of 1812. His brother Thomas bequeathed to Ziba two trunkloads of family papers and documents, which Ziba later bequeathed to his nephew, Thomas H. Darlington.
