Edward Lucky Scarritt was born August 30, 1853, at his Uncle John and Aunt Virginia McCoy's farm in Westport, Jackson County, MO, when his mother, Martha Matilda "Til" (Chick) Scarritt was visiting her sister Virginia. John McCoy founded and platted Westport, KC, MO, in 1833. His likeness can be seen in the form of a bronze statue off Broadway in Westport, KC, MO (see John Calvin McCoy ID# 23491).

EDWARD L. SCARRITT:
*Attended KC first ward school, then Pritchett Institute of Glasgow, then Harvard
*1873 - Went to the law office of Gen. Warwick Huff and, 12 days after his 20th birthday, passed the bar
*1874-75 - Set up practice in Fayette, MO, "Caples & Scarritt"
*1877 - Returned to Kansas City and started a law firm
*1884 - Edward and brother William (W.C. Scarritt) opened a law firm, "Scarritt & Scarritt"
*1885-1886 - City Counselor
*1888 - One of 13 members of the board of freeholders, he drafted Kansas City's first constitutional charter
*1892 - He assisted his father in starting the Scarritt Bible and Training School to train missionaries. Although the work to organize the school began before Nathan Scarritt's death, the school did not open until 1892. It closed in 1924 and moved to Nashville, TN, where it still exists (1988) on the Vanderbilt University campus
*1893 - After inheriting a portion of his father's property, which included Cliff Drive, Edward L. Scarritt built "Gladstone" (located on Gladstone Blvd., Northeast, KC), using architect Stanford White
*1892-1899 - Judge of the Jackson County Circuit Court
*1899 - Returned to law practice
*Wrote the original cable street railway franchise, the Northeast Street Railway Company, which was later part of the Metropolitan Street Railway System
*1902 - Organized the Pioneer & Trust Co.
*1902-1903 – Headed the MO Bar Association
*President of Scarritt Estate Co.
*1907 – Built the Scarritt Building (Downtown KCMO)

He was a director of the Kansas City State Bank. He help to establish the Kansas City Law School and also taught there.

*Edward married Mary Anne Swinney in 1874 in Glasgow, MO. They had one daughter, Berenice (Royster). Anne died of typhoid fever in 1876. Then, in 1880, Edward married Margaret Morris, daughter of Dr. Joel Morris of Westport. Edward died in 1933.
