Annie's maiden name is also listed in some records as Olsen, Pearson, or Pierson.

She was well-educated, having been raised as the daughter of a Swedish lord. Her real father was the head gardener of the lord's estate, and when Annie's mother died in childbirth, he gave Annie up to be raised by the lord and his wife.

Her father joined the LDS Church and decided to emigrate to America with Annie's sister, Ellen, but she died before they could make the trip. Annie decided to leave Sweden and accompany her grieving father to America, where she later joined the Church as well.

Annie was married to Matthew Rowan on February 23, 1862, and they had two children: Sarah Ellen and Annie Jane. Matthew died in 1866, and Annie took on boarders to help support herself and her children.

Aaron Adamson Shepherd was one of these boarders, and Annie married him on November 27, 1871. She was not aware that Aaron had another wife, Eliza Ann, and by the time she found out she was already expecting a child. Annie left Aaron Shepherd, and their daughter, Sylvia Altheda, was born in August of 1872. Sylvia continued to use her mother's married name, Rowan, for the rest of her life.

Annie died October 23, 1901 in South Cottonwood, Utah, and was buried alone in the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
