John David Cantonwine was the eleventh of thirteen children of Jacob and Christina (Dilling) Cantonwine, eleven of whom survived to adulthood, two dying in their early 20's in the Civil War. John was the grandson of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine.

Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." The name Kuntentwine later evolved to Cantonwine, and Charles appears to be the only surnamed Kuntentwine/Cantonwine to immigrate to America. Eight or so years after his arrival in Philadelphia, in about 1814, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob & Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.

John David was born in Clay Township, Lithopolis, Hardin Co., IA, and married Adaline "Addie" Guire (1871-1949) on July 31, 1889 in Monument, El Paso Co., CO. He died in Salt Lake City June 7, 1926. John and Addie had four children, Calvin Clyde, Alice Beatrice, Alfred Shirley, and Wallace Walter.
