HENDERSON JENKINS, AGED NEGRO DIES, WAS BETWEEN 111 & 116 Years Old
Henderson Jenkins, listed conservatively at 11 years of age, died on August 25, 1942, and was buried on August 27, 1942, at Gallion. Universal Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

The elderly gentleman figured he was really 116 years old, but didn't want to overstate his age. He resided in a small cabin on the farm of Mr. Merton John Bowe on the Bonne Iddee southeast of Mer Rouge, It is probable that he was the oldest person in this part of the state, if not in all of Louisiana.

"Uncle Henderson" was born to slaves owned by Jeptha Hughes, a pioneer Baptist circuit ride, in 1831. Having been born into slavery, he experienced the auction block and stated that he went on sale at one time in his life. He remembered the Civil War as a rough time for all, and said he as a middle aged man during the war.

A tribute to the feeble old patriarch, whose descendants are many, was supplied to the Enterprise last year by Thomas Young (T. Y.) Harp, and reads a follows.

May "Old Humbug" live many, many more years and finally walk in the Valhalla by shady rivers and cool lakes teeming with toothsome buffalo and the succulent Opelousas cat in company with Pam and Bill and Ellison. And may his celestial larder always be jam packed with fat possums and delectable chitterlings -- This is the wish of an old friend.

Henderson's survivors are listed as:
Leon Jenkins
Annie Archie
Preston Jenkins
Justina Austin
Sarah Robinson
Most of them as very old themselves.
