John Robert Cain, lovingly known as Bob, Galesburg Chapel 81, of Peoria, Ill. died November 28, 2013, Thanksgiving Day, while surrounded by his wife, children and family.
He was born February 18, 1932 in Appanoose Township, Hancock County, Ill. to Leonard (Bud) and Helen Cain. He was brother to Bill (Mable) Cain, Alice Belle (Frank) Ruschill, Sarah (Ken) Hoenig and Cynthia Cain. He married Nancy Ann True in 1953. He married Judy Tucker Dunlap in June 2000. He attended Colusa High School, graduating in 1950. He attended and graduated from Carl Sandburg Junior College with a degree in Fire Science Technology. He joined the Galesburg Fire Department in 1962, retiring in 1995. Bob enjoyed carpentry, gardening/canning, hunting and travel. He was affiliated with the Galesburg Carpenters Union and Habitat for Humanity. Attending Presbyterian churches throughout his lifetime, he was a member of the First Federated Church of Peoria. He resided in Tucson, Ariz. For five months during the winter season for the past 14 years.
Survived by his wife, Judy Cain of Peoria; his four children, Carl (Merilee) Cain of North Liberty, Iowa, Fred (Lisa) Cain of Texarkana, Texas, Robert Alan (Lea) Cain of Galesburg, Ill., and Cheryl Jo (Rodney) Stickle of Mokena, Ill.; and step-children, Alice Dunlap of San Diego, Calif., Emily (Patrick) Dunlap-Loach of Houston, Texas, and Jane Dunlap of Peoria. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, one step-grandson and seven great grandchildren; with two more great grandchildren on the way. He was preceded by his parents, Bud and Helen Cain and his sister, Alice Belle.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, December 2, 2013 at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Rev. Dr. Forrest Krummel will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Myers Cemetery, near Pontoosuc, Ill. Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the chapel. There will be a memorial fund in honor of John Cain set up at the F&M Bank in Galesburg and Peoria.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to all those praying for Bob over the past three weeks as well as to the dedicated intensive care unit staff of doctors and nurses at Unity Point Health- Methodist Hospital of Peoria. Online condolences may be made at www.h-p-w.com.
