Son of Reuben and Nancy Golleher Brizendine. He was, by occupation, a wagoner and mechanic. Married Martha Craft on March 28, 1865, in Craig County, Virginia.

William joined the Confederate Army and served in Company B, Virginia 28th Regiment. He fought in the Battles of Bull Run, Seven Pines, Gaines Mill, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Cold Harbor, The Wilderness, and Petersburg. He was wounded on July 3, 1863 at the Battle of Gettysburg. After the War he returned to Craig County.
