A crowd of over 100 men broke down the door of the jail in Henderson and took Simpson to a maple tree in the jail yard. Aske if he killed Mrs. Graves he confessed and claimed God had told him to murder her. He was given time to pray and as the crowd yelled "hang the nigger" he was lifted into the air. He was shot as he hung and the crowd left him hanging. The Sheriff and police watched but said they could not do anything to save him.
