Smyrna Farmer is Found Dead
Floyd Herring, 72-year old farmer, was found dead of a heart attack at his home in the Smyrna Section, Lumberton, R 3, late Monday afternoon. He had been in declining health for several years, but had continued fairly active. His wife and daughter found him as they returned home from work a distance away.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Smyrna Baptist Church, of which he was a member, Wednesday at 3 pm by his pastor, Rev Troy Jones of Red Springs, assisted by Rev E.A. Paul of East Lumberton. Interment will be in the Walters Cemetery near Fairmont.
Mr. Herring was twice married. His first wife Lena Bass Herring died in 1917. Of this union, two children survived Erdman Herring of Virgilina, VA, and Mrs. Tessie Herring of the home. Surviving also are his second wife Mrs. Mary Collins Herring; two brothers; Len Herring of Lumberton and Henry Herring of Maxton; four sisters; Mrs. D.B. Suggs of Lumberton, R 3, Mrs. Charlie Bass of Fairmont, R 1, Miss. Marvin Jones and Mrs. Press Edgerton of Hamer, SC, and one granddaughter, Peggy Herring of Virginlina, Va

He was a native of Dillon County in South Carolina where he was born Sept 8, 1873, son of the late John and Mattie Cottingham Herring. He had lived in Robeson County for many years in and around the Fairmont section.

Floyd Herring
Lumberton, R 3, --Funeral services for Floyd Herring who was found dead at his home on Route 3, were held on August 7, at 3 o'clock from the Smyrna Baptist Church, of which he was a member. Rev. E.A. Paul was in charge of rites. Music was furnished by members of the church choir, with Helen Wilkerson as pianist.

Active pallbearers were: Raymond, Daniel, and Jump Herring, Paul Stanton, Jr., Bobby Johnson, and Douglas Collins.

The many beautiful floral offerings were in charge of Mrs. John H. Collins, assisted by Mrs. Wilbur Johnson, D.M. Bracey, George Stone, Daniel Herring, S.G. Suggs, and Wilmer Christenburg, and Misses Myrtle Ruth Johnson, Betty Jean Collins, Earlene, Janet, and Rosa Lee Britt, and Virginia and Betty Jean Herring.
