George McSwain Matheny was the son of John Matheny, Jr. and Elizabeth Hamrick Matheny. He married Mary Hamrick and they had four children. He died in the Civil War at the age of 30.

Note: It was brought to my attention (on 21-01-2015) that there is a memorial for Corp. Geo M. Matheny #20088302 @ Lookout Confederate Cemetery in Scotland, St. Mary's County, Maryland, USA. His name is on one of the bronze tablets inscribed with the names of the Confederate soldiers buried in a mass grave. The inscription reads: Co. G, 18 N.C.
