SGT, CO H, 7th KY VOL CAV, UNION.

When the Civil War broke out, he and two of his brothers, James and John, joined Co H of the 7th Cav on August 10, 1862. Prior to being officially mustered in, they had participated in operations against John Hunt Morgan's troops. After being mustered in, they fought at the Battle of Big Hill and the Battle of Richmond, before moving on to Tennessee.

During an engagement at Mossy Creek, initiated by CSA Gen. W.T. Martin's cavalry attack of the Federal line, Joseph Baird suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He died at the camp hospital, one of an estimated 109 Union casualties. The surviving men of Co H were mustered out at Edgefield, Tennessee on August 10, 1865.
