Nelson and Caroline were the Parents of 11 Children

Caroline Burger Certain was born in Warren County, Ohio., May 27th, 1824 and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Fred Snell in Palmer, Kansas, on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. April 16, 1916, aged 91 years, 10 mos., and 20 days. She was married Nelson B. Certain, Nov. 17, 1841. To this union eleven children were born, all of whom, excepting two have passed before their mother. These two, A. J. Certain of Clyde and Mrs. Fred Snell, of Palmer mourn to the loss of a mother who up to the time of her death, thought only of their interests. This wonderful woman, whose faculties were never dimmed, during the long years of an eventful life, bright and ever capable, first saw the light of day in Ohio, during Monroe’s administrations, joined the Methodist Episcopal church when but 15 years of age, married at 17, and 8 years later moved with her husband to Whitehall, Green County, Ill., and in 1860 to Shelby county, Ill., from thence to Washington county, Kansas in 1871, while this country was still in its infancy. Any one who has watched the growth of Kansas knows something of the hardships, (as well as simple joys,) endured by this brave woman who never faltered in her trust in God and also in her neighbors. In the year 1894 she was left a widow, and since that time has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Fred Snell, tenderly cared for by her and also by her beloved granddaughter, Sylvia Snell Groom, and by her son-in-law Fred Snell.
Twenty-four Grand-children and twenty-seven great grandchildren bless her memory, and friends untold will always remember her kinds words and cheerful greetings. A long life of usefulness has ended, a century was rounding to a close, when the summons came and found her ready.
