In 1860, the family consists of Lucinda's parents, her brothers and sister: Joel Henry Gaines, b. 1854, Illinois, Clemency Ann Gaines, b. 1856 Illinois, and George Washington Gaines, b. 1860 Illinois.

In 1862, Lucinda's father died in Oct, 1862 during the Civil War.

In 1865, Lucinda's mother married Vincent Scott, Aug. 28, 1865, Coles County, Illinois.

Between 1865-1867, Lucinda age 7, with her mother and step father left Illinois for Kansas. With them were Vincent's son Daniel Scott, age 17 and Elizabeth's children Joel Henry Gaines age 11, Clemency Gaines age 9 and George Washington Gaines age 5.

In 1867, there was an addition to the family - a boy named Robert Jefferson Scott who was born in Neosho Co, Canville Township near Chanute, Kansas. The entire family was listed in the Spring 1870 Census for Kansas, Neosho Co, Town of Canville. At that time, the siblings were Daniel (or David) SCOTT(Age 17), Joel Henry GAINES(Age 12), Clemency Ann GAINES(Age 10), Lucinda GAINES(Age 8), George W GAINES(Age 6)

In 1870, Spring 1870 Census of Kansas, Neosho Co, Canville (later called Chanute) lists: Vincent SCOTT, age 64/65, b: 1805 in Kentucky, Elizabeth (LAKE) age 34, Daniel (or David) SCOTT age 21, Joel Henry GAINES age 16, b: Feb 12, 1854 in Illinois, Coles Co, Mattoon, Clemency Ann GAINES age 14, Lucinda GAINES age 12, George Washington GAINES age 10, Robert Jefferson SCOTT age 3, b: July, 23, 1867

In 1870, on August 6, 1870 at age 64, Vincent Scott died from injuries of a farming accident (according to family memories). His wife Elizabeth was pregnant with twins and was left to tend to their family. Also in Kansas was Elizabeth's brother Robert H. Lake, Vincent Scott's brother William M. Scott, and Vincent's sister Rebecca Maria Scott-Ellis.

In 1871 (March) Elizabeth gave birth to twin boys whom she named Francis A. SCOTT b: Mar 31, 1871, d: April 2, 1871 and brother Charles E. SCOTT b: Mar 31, 1871, d: April 4, 1871. Both boys are buried in Kansas, Neosho Co, Chanute at Leanna Cemetery beside their father Vincent Scott. The three are resting across the road from Leanna Christian Church.

In 1875, Lucinda, her brothers and sisters, and her mother Elizabeth are listed as living in Kansas. Listed in 1875 Census of Kansas, Neosho Co, Canville / Erie (Chanute) as Family #10 are: Elizabeth SCOTT, age 42, b: 1832 in Indiana Joel Henry GAINES, age 20, b: Feb 12, 1854 in Illinois, Coles Co, Mattoon, Clemency Ann GAINES, age 18, b: 1856 in Illinois, George Washington GAINES, age 16, b: 1860 in Illinois, Lucinda GAINES, age 14, b: 1858 in Illinois, and Robert Jefferson SCOTT, age 7, b: July, 23, 1868 in Kansas

After 1875, Lucinda and her family along with Robert H. Lake and his family returned to Illinois in covered wagons.

In 1880, all were listed as living in Ash Grove Township, Shelby County, Illinois. Listed in 1880 Census of Illinois, Shelby Co, Ashgrove Township as Family #104. Elizabeth (Elizza) SCOTT age 48, b: 1832 in Indiana; Joel Henry GAINES age 26, b: Feb 12, 1854 in Illinois, Coles Co, Mattoon; Clemency Ann GAINES age 24, b: 1856 in Illinois; Lucinda GAINES age 21, b: 1858 in Illinois; George Washington GAINES age 19, b: 1860 in Illinois; Robert Jefferson SCOTT age 12, b: July, 23, 1868 in Kansas.

Based on family information, the mother (Elizabeth) died when Robert Jefferson Scott was 13 (year 1880/1881). It is believed that the mother is buried in this area or around Mattoon in Cole County, Illinois where she had also lived.
