(Obituary)
July 11, 1934 ~ November 6, 2013
JoAnn Kay Haws, our beloved wife, mother and grandmother, was surrounded by family as she completed her earthly mission and returned home to her loving Heavenly Father on November 6th, 2013.
JoAnn was born in Boise, Idaho on July 11th, 1934 to Leroy and Bernice Chadwick and grew up with her four siblings in nearby Nampa. By the time she had graduated from high school she had a long list of accolades including winning various speech and debate competitions and the title of Miss Nampa in 1952. She was awarded miss congeniality in the Miss Idaho pageant. After high school, she attended BYU with no intentions of getting married. That all changed on her third date with Travis Glenn Haws when he asked for her hand in marriage. The two were married and sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls temple and just celebrated their 60th anniversary this past August. Together they were blessed with eight children, 31 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren and counting.
Throughout her life, JoAnn touched countless lives. She was tireless in her efforts to reach out to those in need as a mother, teacher, manager, missionary, counselor and church leader. While working as a manager at Tektronix in Beaverton, Oregon, she received her bachelor's degree in human resources from George Fox College in 1989. Aside from her family, one of her proudest moments was in 1995 when she graduated from the University of San Francisco with a Master of Marriage and Family Therapy. Over the next decade she dedicated herself as a counselor at Catholic and LDS Family Services.
JoAnn was a gifted speaker and teacher with an ability to blend her training and life's experiences to bless the lives of others. She embraced every opportunity to serve in various callings in the LDS church including stake young women's president, ward relief society president, primary president or gospel doctrine teacher. One of her most cherished callings was her time as a seminary teacher in Forest Grove, Oregon where she came up with her famous slogan S.T.O.M.P. "Students Trying Out Moroni's Promise."
From 1999-2001, JoAnn and her husband served a full-time senior proselyting and leadership mission to the Pennsylvania, Philadelphia mission. Two years later, they set out to serve again, this time in Nauvoo, Illinois.
JoAnn had a love and appreciation for the arts. If she wasn't on stage herself, she was watching her children or grandchildren perform or enjoying one of her favorite Broadway musicals. She loved music and made it a focus in her family.
Even in her passing, JoAnn continues to teach us all about the power of love and service for others. She exemplified the words of King Benjamin, "When ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God". She met every challenge with a can-do attitude which lead her to become an accomplished seamstress, cook, florist, decorator, wedding planner, public speaker and anything else she put her mind to.
While we take comfort in the knowledge of eternal families, we will miss her smile and positive attitude. She is survived by her husband T. Glenn and her eight children Leslie, Michael, Kim, Shelly, Marci, Chad, Todd and Scott as well as her four siblings Maurine, Charlotte, Ron, and Terry.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 16th at the Cottonwood LDS Stake Center in Murray, Utah on 1830 E. 6400 S. at 11:00am with a viewing being held from 9:30-10:30am. There will also be a viewing Friday night at the same location from 6-8pm.
Donations can be sent to the LDS Humanitarian Fund.
