Lena Zirger Sigmund, second child of Michael and Kathryn Zirger, was born June 27, 1871 in Enslingen, Wurttemberg, Germany, and came to America with her father, stepmother, one sister, two brothers and two half sisters, when she was eleven years old. They sailed from Bremen on a two weeks cruise, encountering a two day storm period before arriving safely at New York harbor. They remained in New York two days before boarding a train for Holton, which has since been her home. On October 18, 1892, she was united in marriage with Fred Sigmund in the home of Rev. Harter of the Evangelical Church. To this union were born two sons, Harry Sigmund and Charles.

In 1924 her husband was stricken with a stroke, not permitting him to return to his work as a meat cutter. In 1937 he went to his home eternal. The widow remained in the home at 419 Indiana until the effects of arthritis and failing vision cased her to enter the West View Nursing Home.

The sons, Harry, passed away June 16, 1955, and Dr. Charles passed away August 2, 1961. She was a member of th E.U.B. church of Holton. She passed away June 3, 1964, having reached the advanced age of 92 years, 11 months, 7 days.

She is survived by one granddaughter, Joan Sigmund, Topeka; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Evelyn Sigmund and Mrs. Ruth Russell, both of Holton; one half-sister, Mrs. Kate Hoenshell, Kansas City, MO; two half brothers, Ed Zirger, Holton and John Zirger, Circleville; and other relatives and many friends.
