Abraham was the son of Frederick and Catherine (Switzer) Secrist. His family moved in 1796 from Mountain Falls to Yellow Spring, Hampshire Co., Va. (WV after 1863) and lived with Catherine's father Valentine Switzer. His father purchased Valentine Switzer's property in 1801. Abraham married in the spring of 1817 to Katherine Rudolph, 1795-1871, daughter of George and Christianna (Hotsinpiller) Rudolph, Jr. At marriage, Katherine's father gave them a tract of land in Shenandoah Co. Va. located on Cedar Creek just south of the Shenandoah and Frederick Co. line which they moved to in 1823. They lived there until 1836 when Abraham purchased from his brother Valentine Secrest the Yellow Spring farm which his father had bought from Valentine Switzer. Abe and his family moved back to Yellow Spring and lived there until 1871. Abraham was a farmer and miller, he operated the gristmill his father built in 1812/13. He and Katherine had eight children; John, George, Christina, Joseph, Frederick, twins Eliza and Morgan, and Mary Secrest.
Their children; John, George, Joseph, Frederick and Eliza were deceased by the end of the Civil War. Their son Morgan had gone west around 1855 and lived and worked in Missouri and Kansas. He came home about 1860 and stayed until June 1867 then went back west. He aquired land at Bazaar, Chase Co. Kansas and began farming there. He came back to Yellow Spring in 1870 and persuaded his parents that they should move to Kansas. Abraham sold his Yellow Spring property and the family; Abraham, Katherine, Christine, Mary and Morgan went to Kansas and settled at Matfield Green, Chase Co. Algernon Orndorff, 1868-1908, the son of David and Eliza Orndorff of Hardy Co. Va., had been taken in by Abraham's family and was taken to Kansas with them. Abraham's wife Katherine died on Sept.28,1871 and Abraham died April 17,1873. Both are buried at Matfield Green their graves being unmarked or marked with uninscribed field stones. Abraham and Katherine were members of Hebron Church, Intermont, WV.,they were both confirmed there on May 14,1817. When word of their passing reached Yellow Spring, a memorial service was held for them at Hebron Church.
