Ward Chapin's death and funeral details are documented in a newspaper article in the Brownsville TX Daily Herald on 19 Sep 1894.

He drowned after his horse was startled and stomped him to death while Ward was watering him at Fort Brown in Houston Co., TX.

Ward originally was interred in a military cemetery on an island at the Fort. However, the remains of all soldiers were disinterred and relocated to the Alexandria National Cemetery at Pineville, LA in 1911.
