WOODSTOCK SENTINEL REVIEW, NOV. 14, 1894:
An Old Resident Departs - The death of Mr. Peter Neff, sr., of Burford village, which took place on Sunday, Nov. 4th, has cast a gloom over the township. No man was better known than the late Mr. Neff. He was born on Hamilton Mountain, two miles from the city, in the year 1816. He lived there during his boyhood days but afterwards moved to Burford Township, where the village of Harley now stands. Burford at that time was a howling wilderness with only here and there a settler's cabin and only foot paths through the forest. At the age of 22 Mr. Neff was united in marriage to Miss Ruth Bennett of Hamilton. By this union they were blessed with two sons, William, who resides on the old farm in Burford, and John W. who resides on the sixth concession of Blenheim Township, near Drumbo. After living in Burford for a few years he moved to St. George and bought what is now known as the old Snow Ball farm. He lived there for a few years and then moved to Galt, where he was engaged for 14 years with Lutz & Co. as general agent of the agricultural works. He then went back to the old farm at Burford and remained there until two years ago, when he retired from the farm and moved to Burford Village, where he lived at the time of his death. In religion Mr. Neff was a Methodist and in the early days, before there were any churches or schools in Burford Township, service and Sunday School were held at his house. In politics he was a staunch Reformer and took an active part in the early political struggles of the country. His term of usefulness ended by death at the ripe age of 78 years. A very large concourse of people showed their respect to the departed by following the remains to their last resting place in the Congregational cemetery on Tuesday. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. Mr. Ferguson of Fairfield circuit. Deceased leaves a widow, two sons and four grand-children to mourn his loss.
