Marjorie Smith Smithey, of Roanoke, 87, passed peacefully away in her sleep at home on Saturday, October 26, 2013. Born in Charlottesville, she was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. Dudley C. Smith. She was preceded in death by her husband, J. Hamilton Smithey; her daughter, Ann Allison Smithey; and her brother, Dudley C. Smith Jr. She is survived by her sons, John H. Smithey Jr., of Roanoke and Louis P. Smithey and wife, Diane, of West Plains, Mo.; and four grandsons, Andrew, Sam, Jack, and Adam.
Marjorie graduated from St. Anne's-Belfield School, Charlottesville in 1944, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Class of 1948. She was a teacher in the Roanoke City Public Schools until her retirement. She was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, serving on its vestry and as a Sunday School teacher, and was a member of the Junior League of Roanoke Valley. Her interest in young people involved her with Girl Scouts, Office on Youth, Youth Support Services of the Juvenile Court, and the Community Youth Program at St. John's Church. She was a life-long tennis player and enjoyed playing the sport up to the age of 87.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts be made to St. John's Community Youth Program, P.O. Box 257, Roanoke, VA 24002, or The Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 11525, Roanoke, VA 24022.
Interment was at Fair View Cemetery following a family graveside service. A church memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Oakey's Roanoke Chapel and Crematory. www.oakeys.com.
